English as a Second Language (ESL) :

ESL programs have small classes so students can receive individual attention from their teachers. Students study English and also participate in the cultural and social activities of the school and community where they study. The goal of an ESL program is to improve a student's level of English. ESL classes teach different English language skills, depending on students' English abilities, interests, and needs. All programs teach the following: conversational English, grammar, reading, listening comprehension, writing, and vocabulary. For more information call 605 353 7175 or email Rey Colón.

Post Secondary Education

The Post Secondary Education services are designed to help individuals plan their continuing education. Assessments help individuals choose an area of study suited to their interests and aptitudes. Cornerstones CLC also has information on area colleges and technical institutes.

  • Choices: A computer program that engages students in an interactive process that builds self-knowledge, encourages them to explore occupations and schools, and helps them plan for the future. The connections between occupations, majors, and schools make it easy for students to use Choices on their own.
  • Kiersey Temperament Sorter and Work Values Survey: These assessments are used to identify the type of work environment most desired by an individual. Assessment results are based upon personal traits and values.
  • College and Technical School Information: Cornerstones CLC has information about colleges and technical schools. Individuals are encouraged to visit the Resource Room when Planning their post-secondary education.

Alternative Setting Schools:

Pride High Alternative School offers an alternative route to earning a high school diploma. Pride High is part of the Huron School District, and follows Huron High School curriculum, residency, and credit requirements. Each student has an individualized study plan and receives one-on-one help from instructors to achieve academic goals.

Second Chance High is a unique educational setting that provides options for individuals wanting to earn a high school diploma. Academic and vocationally oriented education programs are provided through an individualized, student-centered approach. Programs are attentive to the needs of a career-oriented curriculum and are sensitive to the variety of learning styles among students.

Participants will learn through multi-media instructional classrooms, small groups, community based outreach programs, and employment opportunities. Content areas will stress individualized education, career development, and personal growth in a positive and caring environment.

Second Chance High staff will work with each student to assess academic, career, and personal needs in order to develop an individualized learning plan. Emphasis will be placed on helping students develop self-discipline and responsibility similar to what would be expected of them in a work setting. Staff will maintain and model an orderly learning atmosphere through fair and respectful treatment of students.

A fundamental belief of the school is that all students are of value and that they need guidance to find and develop the positive qualities they possess. We understand that many of them come to us with life circumstances that present barriers to their  success. We will strive to be non-judgmental and to provide a structured and supportive environment. We understand they have histories of failures in the "traditional" educational system. We will strive to find creative approaches to their learning. This will enable them to experience success and create satisfying futures.

Second Chance High services, programs, and materials are offered without regard to race, color, sex, marital status, religion, national origin, disability, age, political affiliation, citizenship, or belief.

Technology Literacy

In order to function in the 21st Century workplace, employees must be literate in basic computer skills.  Through the Adult Education and Literacy program, learners can gain basic computer skills in word processing, spreadsheets, databases, internet, and email usage
